Hunziker was born in Sorengo (Lugano), in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. Her mother Ineke is Dutch and her father Rudolf, who died of a heart attack in 2001, was a German-speaking Swiss. He was a painter, but worked as a hotel manager. In 1983, the family moved to Ostermundigen, a suburb of Bern in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. In Ostermundigen Hunziker attended elementary school. After moving to Milan with her mother, she decided to become a fashion model and was hired by Riccardo Gay, a renowned agent. Although considered to be both too heavy and short, at 17 she posed for well-known labels such as Armani, Rocco Barocco, La Perla, Colmar, Fuerte Ventura, Lovable and Swish.

In 1996 she met the Italian singer Eros Ramazzotti. On December 5 of the same year, they became parents to daughter Aurora Ramazzotti. They married on 24 April 1998 and lived separately from 2002; the marriage was divorced on 25 March 2009. With the birth of Aurora's son Cesare, Hunziker became a grandmother at the age of 46. [18]

In 2013, Hunziker announced her engagement to Trussardi heir Tomaso Trussardi. [19] In the fall of 2013, she gave birth to a daughter together. [20] In 2014, she married Trussardi. [21] Their second daughter was born in 2015. [22] In mid-January 2022, Hunziker and Trussardi announced their separation, saying that they would continue to take care of their two daughters "in love". The separation after ten years was justified by the fact that they wanted to change "their joint life project". [23]

As of March 2024, she has amassed 5.7 million followers on Instagram, 1.6 million followers on TikTok and 163,000 subscribers on her YouTube platform.
